Characteristics of a Successful Leader

Last night I lay awake and reflected on all the successful leaders I’ve known over the years. What were the top  leadership and personal qualities that made these men and women successful? They,

  1. Demonstrated Humility
  2. Had Social and Emotional Intelligence
  3. Showed the capacity to Envision the Future for their organizations
  4. Led the change necessary to fulfill #3
  5. Surrounded themselves with the Best Team possible
  6. Manifested Executive Presence
  7. Told Great Stories
  8. Mastered Influencing Skills

What similar leadership qualities would be on your list?

I am a licensed psychologist and management consultant and have always been intrigued by how leaders can inspire people in their organizations. The bottom line is that people are not always motivated by material rewards, the use of the carrot or the stick, fear and intimidation, and command and control, Five human needs inspire and drive us. Kristine S MacKain, Ph.D and myself describe these inspirational forces in our book "What Inspirational Leaders Do" (Kindle 2008)

I have been reading your blog for the last week. Thanks for the reminder of why I wanted to become a leader in the first place. At times ego or doubt gets in the way. It’s nice to get back to reality of why I am where I am today. Keep posting!!

I so appreciate your comment. It is very encouraging. We all need to remind ourselves ‘of the better angels of our nature’ or the reasons based on the soul of why we do what we do. Just the fact that you are aware of your motivations tells me that you are on a ‘good’ path. Don’t let discouragement rob you of your joy.
